Audition Requirements

Students and parents interested in applying for the SMMCS photography magnet program must bring the following examples of student work to be eligible for the program in addition to a written exam that will be administered by the instructor at the time of the evaluation:

Students MUST bring a total of 9 (5"x7") photographs presentable for evaluation. Photographs may be matted, in an album or in a plastic sheet portfolio. Please do not bring FRAMED works. Three of each as follows:

  • 3 Portraits A close up of a relative or friend, printed in black and white. Things to avoid: Distracting backgrounds, snapshots or smiley poses (Say cheese!)
  • 3 Photographs that concentrate on ARCHITECTURE for the subject matter. (Maybe in color or black and white) Explore different angles and vantage points.
  • 3 Photographs that explore the element of COLOR. Allow COLOR to be the dominant element. Avoid distracting backgrounds and move in close.
  • 5 Additional pieces of art that demonstrate the use of other media. (Ex. but not limited to: painting, drawing, collages, printmaking and watercolor).
  • A test to determine the student's ability to solve visual problems and analyze the meaning of photographs will be administered during the evaluation.
  • An interview to help determine the student's level of discipline, interest and suitability for the program will also be conducted. 


M-DCPS VISUAL & PERFORMING ARTS MAGNETS ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of 2.0 Grade Point Average in core academic subject areas (e.g. language arts,mathematics, science, social studies) and in conduct.
  • All effort grades in core academic classes must be a “2” or higher.
  • No more than 10 unexcused absences will be allowed for previous year.
  • Placement is based on audition/interview results.
  • Parents must contact the school by January 15th to schedule auditions/interviews.
  • FCAT scores can only be reviewed as part of the eligibility process under very limited circumstances.
  • Secondary schools with a six period schedule may review FSA scores to determine if a student has at least one elective period available to take magnet theme courses.

How do I apply?

Can my child apply even though he/she may have not had prior training?

Yes. We are looking for students who exhibit "natural talent" and potential. Beginners and advanced students are good candidates for the magnet program.

Can my child audition for more than one magnet?

No. Students may ONLY audition for one magnet program.

Can my child switch programs?

No. Students may not change magnets. We are looking for committed individuals that are dedicated to one art form for the entire time he/she attends SMMCS.
