Magnet High School Portfolio Development

  • "A portfolio is a collection of your work, which shows how your skills and ideas have developed over a period of time. It demonstrates your creativity, personality, abilities and commitment, and helps us to evaluate your potential."

The primary objective of a magnet program is to develop an individual's artistic voice through an art portfolio. A portfolio is a requirement for students that wish to pursue an art magnet high school program. In addition to gaining acceptance to schools, it can also be used as a means to gain future employment, apprenticeships or internships. The portfolio is a living body of work. It can change during the course of the student's artistic education. Below are just some of the characteristics that embody a student portfolio:

    • Exploration of a diverse use of media. (Drawings, Photographs, Painting, Collage, etc.)
    • 15 to 25 pieces varying in size. (Depending on school requirements.)
    • A demonstration of growth and artistic development.
    • Communicates your creative voice.

In the Photography magnet, we will be developing a student's portfolio beginning in the 6th grade.  Exploration of darkroom and digital photography will be at the forefront of the instruction. Additionally, other techniques that encompass photography will also be explored, such as but not limited to: collage, photo-montage, painting, watercolor, drawing and printmaking processes.

A well rounded portfolio is key for the advancement for any artistic career. It is never to soon to start and with the proper guidance, parental support and student self driven desire to succeed, anything is possible!
